Susie Warhurst, Head of International at Apple Podcasts, shared a post on LinkedIn on 28 May 2026 by Marshall Lewy, Head of Audible Content for North America at Audible, with the comment “Really exciting to see this launch from Audible now live on Apple Podcasts, which means subscribers can listen to hundreds of amazing titles right in the Apple Podcasts app.”
In its press release of 21 May 2026, Audible states “nearly 700 premium podcast titles” are available to subscribers in 135 countries covered by Audible services in the US and the UK. The company plans expansion to Australia, Japan and Canada in June 2026. The press release does not publish a specific list of countries.
What a connected subscription is
A connected subscription is a business link between two accounts, not a new tier. Audible subscribers connect their existing account and listen to content directly in Apple Podcasts. Billing stays with Audible.
Marshall Lewy wrote in a LinkedIn post that “Your Audible subscription connected on Apple Podcasts includes many of the ad-free, early-access and exclusive binge content previously available on Wondery+, along with many Audible Originals that have never been available to listen to on Apple Podcasts before.” The listed Audible Originals include titles featuring Malcolm Gladwell, Mel Robbins, Jon Ronson, Kerry Washington and Stephen Fry. The new investigative series “OnlyFantasy” by Leon Neyfakh and Gracie Canaan launches as the first title available within Apple Podcasts with binge listening for Audible subscribers.
Lewy is quoted in the official Audible press release with the sentence “By bringing Audible's distinctive catalog to Apple Podcasts, we're allowing members to find their favorite Originals where many of them already listen to their podcasts.” Apple has issued no separate press statement. The only public reaction so far is the share by Susie Warhurst.
The end of Wondery+
Amazon announced the end of Wondery+ on 3 March 2026. According to Variety reporting, the customer notice on the Wondery website reads “Wondery+ is ending in the coming months. Both the Wondery app and Wondery+ subscription service will no longer be available.” Amazon has not published a specific end date for the service. Variety noted that in 2025 Amazon let go around 100 employees of the Wondery division as part of moving narrative programming under the Audible brand.
Amazon bought Wondery in December 2020. Variety reported a price of around $300 million at the time, citing the Wall Street Journal; Amazon did not formally disclose the transaction value. The catalogue of Dr. Death, Business Wars, American Scandal and Dying for Sex remains live, but it is moving under Audible both in distribution and in business terms. Lewy says in the post that “These shows are joined by nearly 200 beloved ex-Wondery series”, while “While these are still available widely with ads, the additional benefits and exclusive content previously on Wondery+ are now on Audible.”
Alongside the connection with Apple Podcasts, Audible is consolidating its catalogue with a new tier. Audible launched the Audible Standard plan on 3 March 2026 at $8.99 a month in the US, with expansion to the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and France. The plan includes one audiobook a month and access to a curated library, where, according to the press release, there are “nearly 200 hit titles previously available on Wondery+ which are now Audible Originals”. In early testing, the company reported a “strong double digit percentage increase in new member sign-ups”, but it did not disclose the exact percentage or the comparison base.
Apple without its own production
Apple Podcasts Subscriptions introduced a “delegated delivery” programme on 10 January 2023. AppleInsider reported at the time that producers with their own hosting (Libsyn, Omny Studio, RSS.com and later Acast) can publish paid content to the Apple app directly from their original workflow. According to the official Apple Podcasters Program documentation, the standard commission on Apple Podcasts Subscriptions is 30% in the first twelve months of a subscription, dropping to 15% afterwards, once “net revenue increases to 85% of the subscription price”.
The connected subscription with Audible is a different model. The subscription does not pass through Apple’s billing, so the standard commission does not play a primary role in this transaction. The exact commercial framework between Apple and Audible has not been disclosed by the companies. For Apple the benefit is content. A premium catalogue with celebrity audio dramas and Audible Originals is available inside Apple Podcasts without the need to sign licensing agreements with each author separately and without an investment of its own in production.
The move saves Amazon the costs of running the separate Wondery app and the Wondery+ infrastructure, while extending the distribution of Audible within the iOS ecosystem.
Competition and the European layer
In Q1 2026 Spotify reported 293 million Premium subscribers globally, growing by 25 million year on year. Spotify’s podcast strategy has shifted over the last two years from exclusive deals such as the Joe Rogan one to creator partnerships and video podcasting. Bundling Audible’s premium catalogue into a third-party app moves in the opposite direction to Spotify’s approach of an ad-funded feed inside its own app.
For European podcast platforms such as Acast (Stockholm), Podimo (Copenhagen) and Schibsted PodMe (Oslo), this step confirms the hypothesis that large platforms function primarily as distribution channels and that producers move into bundles with major tiers. Acast has supported delegated delivery to Apple Podcasts Subscriptions since 2023. None of the European platforms has so far published a similar connected subscription with Apple.
The Audible connected subscription in 135 countries also affects European Audible UK subscribers. Audible.de and audible.fr operate separate storefronts and do not fall within the first wave of the Apple Podcasts connection. The company has not stated a timeline for these markets. Audible Standard at $8.99 in the English-speaking market, connected to Apple Podcasts and with 200 ex-Wondery titles in its library, changes the reference price for content for a European consumer who compares it with Podimo (around €5 a month, local content) and with Spotify (podcasts with ads and conditional availability).
The advertising inventory that was historically available through Wondery in its ad-supported version remains, in Lewy’s words, “widely with ads”. The version without advertising and with early access, which was a separate product on Wondery+, is now part of the Audible Standard plan. A direct Audible subscription is the only route to the premium version of this content within Apple Podcasts.
