„One thing we heard consistently: creators want a tool that handles the analysis, not one that does the creative work for them," wrote Brett Westervelt, head of the Edits app, on the company blog. On 30 September Instagram announced a conversational AI assistant that performs this analysis. Edits, a mobile video creation and editing app launched as a direct competitor to ByteDance's CapCut, will now offer a layer that accesses creators' account metrics, comments and trending content on Instagram.

On the company blog, Westervelt spelled out which data the assistant accesses. „The assistant knows your account's Instagram metrics, things like follows, views, video retention, likes, shares and combines them with your comments, what's trending on Instagram and what your audience is into. It can spot patterns in your performance over time and surface actionable insights that are hard to see from the metrics alone."

Westervelt also said that the Edits team developed the tool in close collaboration with a group of creators. „Edits assistant does the digging for you. The creative calls are still yours."

Instagram first showed the AI assistant in June 2026 at a closed event for creators. At the same event, Meta announced that it is also working on a desktop version of Edits.

Edits as an app for mobile-first production

Edits is a mobile editing app available on iOS and Android, with sign-in through an existing Instagram account. Its core toolset includes clip-level precision timeline editing, automatic footage enhancement, green screen and AI image animation. The app also offers advanced audio tools, a teleprompter, keyframe animation, cinematic filters and a caption generator. Exports are watermark-free.

The conversational AI assistant adds an interpretive layer on top of the metrics data. A basic statistics overview existed in Edits before. The new tool extends it with a conversational interface that identifies patterns.

YouTube is working on an editing tool for YouTube Create

A week earlier, on 23 September 2026, YouTube presented its own conversational video editing tool at the Made on YouTube event. YouTube said it will be available in early 2027 in the YouTube Create app and for YouTube Shorts. Creators can give editing instructions in natural language. The system picks the best shots from recorded footage, adds music, transitions and captions, or removes pauses in speech.

The YouTuber Happy Kelli, who described the tool at the event, named the key benefit. „It's a collaborative partner that edits with you, not for you," she said at Made on YouTube. A standard one-hour shoot, she said, means ten or more hours of work in an editing programme.

Instagram builds its assistant on performance analysis of creator data. YouTube opts for direct assistance with the editing itself. According to TechCrunch's analysis, Meta approaches AI analytically, while YouTube proposes help with the editing process as such.

CapCut from ByteDance, the third key player among editing tools for creators, has over 100 million downloads and a 4.7 rating in app stores. The app offers an AI caption generator, an AI video generator and text-to-speech. CapCut has not yet announced an analytics assistant comparable to the new Edits feature.

Access and pricing through Meta One

Creators face a usage limit on the AI assistant in Edits. Unlimited use is available through a Meta One subscription. Meta One Plus costs USD 7.99 a month, Meta One Premium USD 19.99 a month. The premium tier also includes extended reasoning capabilities and more options for video and image generation.

Meta One is an umbrella subscription framework consolidating premium features across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The AI tiers are still in testing. Meta has run pilots in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia.

Edits under the EU AI Act

Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires providers of interactive AI systems, from 2 August 2026, to inform users that they are interacting with AI, unless this is obvious from the situation. The obligation applies no later than the first interaction. Meta operates in the EU and, as the provider of an AI assistant for creators, falls under this framework.
