A mega influencer with a million followers looks like a safe bet. A big number and global reach. But data from 2025 says something different. According to Meltwater research, micro creators on Instagram achieve an average engagement rate of 3.86%, while mega influencers with more than a million followers generate 1.21%.
This number alone does not explain why 89% of marketers rate micro creators as more effective for ROI than larger creators. Nor does it explain why Influencer Marketing Hub data from 2025 shows that micro creators deliver 5 to 10 times better ROI than macro and mega influencers. Something other than engagement is behind this.
A micro creator speaks to an audience that chose them. The topic is specific, the relationship is personal, and recommendations sound like advice from someone the followers know. In 2025, algorithms also stopped rewarding raw reach and began prioritising quality signals: comments, shares and saves. Micro creators naturally dominate in this environment. Nano creators on TikTok, meanwhile, achieve an average engagement rate of around 10%, figures mega influencers can only dream of.
New numbers that change the equation
Until now, the discussion about micro creators has revolved mainly around how advantageous they are for brands. But 2025 brought a shift on the other side of the equation, that of the creators themselves. According to Influencer Marketing Hub data, full-time creation now sustains 62% of micro creators. In 2022 it was 31%. Micro has stopped being a side activity and has become the main source of income.
At the same time, the share of performance-based pay models is growing. According to Lumanu’s 2025 analysis, which draws on data covering over $1 billion in creator payouts, performance contracts tied to conversions and sales grew 35% year on year. For micro creators with a measurable, loyal audience, this model is advantageous. Their followers buy. And affiliate codes and tracked links prove it with concrete numbers, not just engagement metrics.
Why this matters for the Central European market
In a fragmented language market such as the Czech or Slovak space, the logic of micro creators applies twice over. A mega influencer with a million followers may exist, but their audience is scattered. A micro creator with 20,000 followers focused on a specific topic, whether finance, sustainable fashion or technology, reaches exactly the people a brand is looking for.
According to studies by Statusphere, the average CPM of micro influencer campaigns ranges between $4 and $5, while standard ads on Meta and TikTok run at around $12 to $14. One mega influencer post costing tens of thousands of CZK can therefore be replaced by a portfolio of micro creators who deliver more content, better engagement and attributable results.
Gifted collaborations as an underrated format
The new data revealed one more unexpected finding. Product collaborations without direct financial reward, so-called gifted collaborations, achieve on average a 12.9% higher engagement rate than paid partnerships, according to Influencer Marketing Hub. The effect is even stronger for nano and micro creators, with an average engagement of 2.76% versus 1.94% for paid campaigns.
This does not mean creators should work for free. It means that genuine interest in a product is measurably reflected in content performance. Brands that choose micro creators based on relevance rather than follower count benefit most often.
Who earns in this model
Brands get better conversion results for lower CPMs. Micro creators gain more stable income from long-term partnerships, with 58% of brand collaborations in 2025 concluded as repeat or long-term contracts rather than one-off campaigns.
Mega influencers will remain relevant for global launches, brand awareness and mass campaigns. But for conversions, customer loyalty and measurable business results, the data consistently points in the same direction. A micro creator with a trusted, niche audience and the ability to attribute content is today a more valuable partner than a million-follower star whose followers scroll past without stopping.
