Hello from Prague. This was the week creator economy stopped being background noise. YouTube, OpenAI, IAB, and Meta — all in seven days. I haven't seen a week like this since Cannes.

Jimmy Donaldson, the founder of Beast Industries, took a seat on the Shark Tank S18 panel on Tuesday. Not as a pitch. As an investor.

Beast Industries stands behind 450 million subscribers and a $200 million investment from Bitminu. Donaldson put Sandra MacGregor — a professional CEO from SoftBank Vision Fund — in charge of the company.

So why do this?

Shark Tank is mass-market American television. A panel seat with MrBeast is a signal no advertising budget can buy.

Beast Industries is sending a straightforward message. The world's biggest creators are media companies. Bitminu bet $200 million on that thesis. MacGregor's hire from SoftBank confirms this is being built on technology-company timelines — not an influencer deal with a twelve-month horizon.

Donaldson and Beast Industries are playing a long game. They're betting that the biggest creators stop being a category on the margins and become leaders of new media companies. The Shark Tank seat is the first visible move in front of a broadcast audience.

Five Things You Need to Know

  • IAB merged Creator Fronts, Podcast Upfront, and Playfronts into one week for the first time. US spending on creator advertising is expected to reach $44 billion this year. The industry admitted it doesn't have unified measurement. Without standards, the biggest brand spenders stay cautious.
  • OpenAI hired Sam Yam, Patreon co-founder, to lead a new Creator Product division. He's bringing head of product Drew Rowny and head of engineering Shannon Ma. Patreon laid off 93 people — a fifth of the company — in July 2026. Specific tools are expected at DevDay on September 29.
  • YouTube's Made on YouTube event showed an AI editor in Studio and 40 million A/B tests run by creators. The affiliate shopping program expands to 35 countries by year-end, including Europe.
  • Isobel Lorna sold out her Agende planner in one hour, taking £250,000 in pre-sales. She had 500 units in stock and over 100,000 people on the waitlist. Buyers hadn't seen the product before signing up. The audience alone was enough.
  • Meta launched AI agent Muse on September 8. Within days it was the most downloaded app in the United States. Marketers deployed it for competitor Reels research. LinkedIn has promised a similar agent — no timeline given.

How YouTube Became the Default Television

Streaming now accounts for 49% of TV viewing time in the United States.

According to Nielsen, YouTube captured a record 14.2% of all television viewing time in the US in July 2026 — more than any other distributor. Netflix came in at 7.8%.

Why it holds

It isn't just the algorithm. BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, has started producing shows directly for YouTube. A traditional content publisher adapted its production pipeline to the platform.

YouTube added Shorts Series on top of that — a seasonal format stacking vertical clips into episodes and seasons. Microdramas on the platform logged 6.5 billion views in the first half of the year and are growing more than 90% on TV screens. The format was built by paid apps ReelShort and DramaBox. YouTube delivers it free, to an audience it already has.

What advertisers see

IAB's decision to merge three previously separate events into one week is an admission that creator video, podcast, and gaming inventory now compete for the same media time and the same advertising dollars.

Forty-four billion dollars is moving through the US creator ad market this year. The industry admits it lacks consistent measurement. Without it, the biggest brand spenders keep their options open.

OpenAI Goes After Creators

Patreon co-founder Sam Yam is joining OpenAI to head a new Creator Product division. He's bringing head of product Drew Rowny and head of engineering Shannon Ma with him.

Striking timing. Patreon laid off 93 people in July 2026 — a fifth of the company. The firm that defined direct-from-audience revenue is losing a co-founder just as OpenAI moves into creator tooling.

Meta's Muse was the most downloaded app in the US within days of launching. OpenAI's DevDay on September 29 was expected to deliver creator tools. Details remain vague.

Number of the Week Is...

...14.2 percent.

  • Netflix at 7.8%, roughly half of YouTube
  • Streaming overall at 49% of TV viewing
  • BBC Studios now produces directly for YouTube
  • YouTube microdramas: 6.5 billion views in the first half of the year
