NBCUniversal and YouTube have announced a multi-year global partnership. The Peacock streaming service will join YouTube Premium in the US from the start of 2027, reaching an audience that it did not build itself.
What the deal includes
The whole Peacock library will be available in YouTube Premium. Live sport includes the NFL, the Olympics, the NBA, MLB, the Premier League, the WNBA and American university competitions. Among shows and films, it includes Love Island USA, The Real Housewives, Saturday Night Live, The Traitors, The Office and feature films from Universal Pictures.
The rollout has two phases. Peacock Premium will be available as a standalone add-on from the end of summer 2026 through YouTube Primetime Channels, and a Premium Plus version with limited advertising has been available there since the end of June. Full inclusion in the YouTube Premium bundle comes at the start of 2027. YouTube Premium in the US costs $16.99 a month. A standalone Peacock Premium subscription costs $10.99 a month.
The Peacock and YouTube Premium bundle is currently for the American market only. Outside the US, the partnership so far extends only to Universal+ and Hayu in selected countries, so a European viewer mainly gets a signal about where distribution is heading, rather than a finished product.
A bundle instead of an acquisition
NBCUniversal is taking a different route from the rest of the industry. According to TechCrunch, much of the streaming market is focused on mergers and acquisitions, while NBCUniversal is expanding its reach through partnerships. Paramount Skydance has agreed to take over Warner Bros. Discovery, and Fox is buying Roku. Instead of buying a rival, Peacock is placing its content in front of the audience that already watches on YouTube.
The economics make sense. According to TechCrunch, Peacock posted its first quarterly profit in its history in the second quarter of this year, after years of deepening losses. Adjusted operating profit was $189 million on revenue of $1.9 billion, with 48 million paying subscribers, according to Comcast’s results.
Placement in YouTube Premium adds a new channel to the audience without the cost of buying a whole company.
Matt Strauss, Chairman of the Media Group at NBCUniversal, framed it in the announcement of the deal: “With this agreement, Peacock accelerates its next phase of growth by bringing the service to millions of YouTube Premium subscribers, driving long-term value for our business.” Mike Cavanagh, Co-CEO of Comcast, added that “This partnership brings NBCUniversal’s world-class content and iconic franchises to YouTube’s unmatched scale and global platforms.”
YouTube as a distribution layer
For YouTube, the deal is another step towards becoming the place where a television show, live sport and creators meet. According to TechCrunch, the partnership supports the strategy of bringing premium television, live sport and creative content onto one platform. YouTube chief Neal Mohan summed it up: “YouTube Premium brings your favorite creators, artists and cultural moments together uninterrupted, and now, we’re pairing that ultimate viewing experience with Peacock’s expansive lineup of live sports like Sunday Night Football and the NBA, blockbuster Universal movies, and original series.”
The deal also includes an advertising layer. NBCUniversal and YouTube are deepening their collaboration through the FreeWheel ad platform, and Peacock content will also appear on Xfinity and Xumo services. Live sport and its production are the subject of a separate part of the partnership.
A classic streaming player is acknowledging that a premium library alone does not capture attention. Attention sits with creators on YouTube, and NBCUniversal is going after it on someone else’s platform. The centre where a television show, an NFL broadcast and a creator’s video meet is moving out of its own app and into someone else’s.
