Podcasts have become a regular part of life for millions of Czechs over the past few years. The awards that shine a spotlight on them every year matter more too. The Podcast roku poll enters its seventh year and is no longer just about the prizes. On Monday 16 June, the Občanská plovárna venue in Prague will turn into a meeting place for creators, fans, brands and media professionals.

You can vote at www.podcastroku.cz until 5 June.

The Podcast roku poll will once again showcase the best of what is being made on the Czech scene. This most important award for podcast creators takes place for the seventh time this year and brings several novelties. A new category has been added, public service podcasts, along with a new Podcast Scene Prize.

At the heart of the awards is the public vote, the so-called Listeners' Choice Award, where podcasts are currently collecting votes from their fans. The Discovery of the Year prize also remains. This year a podcast in each of the eight categories will win it. The winners are also chosen by professionals, this time by ambassadors, prominent figures representing each category. Thanks to Discovery of the Year, not only established names but also new projects of exceptional quality have a chance to win Podcast roku.

The new Podcast Scene Prize is an award from professionals for professionals. The overall winner is chosen by a jury made up of creators themselves and other figures from the Czech podcast scene.

Public service podcasts also received their own awards this year, adding to the categories News and Context, Interviews and Entertainment, Self-development, Crime, Sport, Business and Technology, and Leisure.

This year's ceremony programme stays true to what works, and once again it will be hosted by actor, foodie and big podcast fan Lukáš Hejlík. We can also look forward to a talk show with a number of well-known figures from the Czech podcast scene. Last time, the guests were the hosts of Vlevo dole, Čelisti, Hodina dějepichu and Chumelenice. The evening ceremony will, as usual, take place at Občanská plovárna and, as last year, is open to the public. Tickets are available at www.podcastroku.cz.

When podcasts shake up Czechia

The popularity of podcasts in Czechia is growing. There was no voting in the first year of the poll. A year later, 14,000 people had already cast their vote, and last year as many as 116,000 did. The scene itself has also grown in the meantime. According to data from the České podcasty platform, 1,159 new podcasts were created in Czechia in the last 12 months alone, which is 15.6% more year on year. In total, more than 8,500 Czech shows are now registered, and around 100 new ones are added every month.

Although genre preferences change over time, some formats keep their steady appeal. True crime is a constant, as are interviews and talk shows. Podcasts focused on personal development are also winning a growing audience. Shows with a women's focus are seeing a big rise in interest too.

How did it go last year?

Last year's awards went to podcasts that won the hearts of thousands of listeners. Opravdové zločiny was named the overall winner for the third time in a row, Hype-Cast took second place and Krimi příběhy came third. More than 116,000 people took part in the vote, picking their favourites across ten thematic categories.

You can find the full list of categories, nominated podcasts and a record of last year's ceremony, including photos, on the website www.podcastroku.cz. You can vote until 5 June, and one clear rule applies: you can vote only once per email address. Repeated attempts are filtered out automatically, so those votes will not be counted.
