Early in August, Reddit still ranked among the most cited sources from which ChatGPT builds its answers. Within six days it had vanished. According to Promptwatch data, Reddit held an average share of 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations between 18 July and 7 August 2026. From 8 August it began to fall, and in the window from 14 to 17 August it dropped to 0.52%, a fall of 86.4%.

For a brand that built its visibility in AI answers on discussion threads and review sites, one of the main channels narrowed from one day to the next. But behind the figure lies a more important shift in how the model picks its sources.

How ChatGPT's search has changed

Jake Ward, co-founder of the SEO agency Contrast, pointed out that alongside Reddit's decline, so-called query fan-outs have changed. These are the sub-queries into which the model breaks a user's question. Instead of searching the web broadly, according to him, ChatGPT now reaches for more specific queries, such as site:ibm.com, ibm official pricing or ibm docs [feature].

“Reddit is disappearing from ChatGPT citations right now, but I honestly think everyone is focusing on the wrong part of the story,” Ward wrote. More important to him is the question he posed in the same post: “Is ChatGPT starting to decide which sources it trusts before it searches?” In other words, the model may be choosing trusted domains before it starts searching, so a source's authority counts for more than where an individual page ranks in the results.

Weight has shifted to documentation and established companies

Ward relies on a dataset published by Ira Bodnar, who works on optimising content for AI search engines, which describes the whole shift in the mix of cited sources. In it, Reddit fell from 15% to zero, and review sites and forums such as Capterra or G2 went from 7% to zero as well. The share of smaller company websites dropped from 66% to 32%.

On the other side, a layer of official content has grown. Documentation and help pages rose from 2% to 32%, established companies' websites from 4% to 18%, and app catalogues with moderation and ratings from 2% to 17%. User-generated content is thus disappearing from citations in favour of a brand's own documentation and of brands with their own domains.

Search rankings still carry through to citations

That authority and search ranking remain linked is shown by older data. An AirOps analysis from March 2026 found that 89.6% of ChatGPT queries trigger a follow-up search, and 32.9% of cited pages appear only because of these fan-out queries, not because of the user's original wording. Pages in first position on Google were cited in 43.2% of cases, 3.5 times more often than pages outside the top twenty. In total, 55.8% of cited pages ranked in the top 20 for at least one query.

The new mix of sources sharpens this logic. When the model steers more specific queries straight to official domains, a discussion thread loses its position for a query such as “ibm official pricing”, while a documentation page keeps it.

Yet Reddit is a paying partner of OpenAI

Reddit has a licensing agreement with OpenAI from mid-2024, which Search Engine Land estimates at roughly $70 million a year, and a parallel deal with Google worth around $60 million a year. Even so, Reddit's share of live ChatGPT citations has fallen almost to zero.

The explanation lies in the difference between two things that are easily confused. Licensing is paid access to content for training and for products such as Reddit Answers. Citation rate is how often the model names a source in an answer it is generating from the web right now. The Columbia Journalism Review recalls that between August 2024 and June 2025 Reddit was the most cited domain in Google AI Overviews and in Perplexity, and the second most cited in ChatGPT. A paid partnership did not protect that position.

Google and Perplexity show a milder shift

The drop is so far largely a matter of one platform. According to a comparison by explainx.ai, Reddit's share in Google AI Overviews fell only from 2.37% to 2.10%, that is by 11.3%, and in Google AI Mode from 2.22% to 1.54%. No sharp break comparable to ChatGPT appeared there.

For a European brand trying to work out where AI search engines will see it, this means that visibility built on discussions and review sites is holding up worse in ChatGPT from one day to the next than the brand's own documentation, help pages and catalogue profiles on domains the model grants authority. The three platforms are changing the rules at different speeds, so one channel does not guarantee the same thing tomorrow.

Ward admits as much himself. “In another 2 weeks, this could all look different again.”
